This event featured a keynote address by China’s new ambassador to the United States of America, Qin Gang, followed by a conversation with Ambassador Qin and U.S.-China relations experts. Jointly organized by the George H. W. Bush Foundation for U.S.-China Relations and The Carter Center, this event is Ambassador Qin’s first public conversation since arriving in Washington, D.C. in late July.

Ambassador Qin spoke of the history of U.S.-China relations beginning with normalization, remarking on the progress of the relationship. Invoking democratic thinkers from Plato to President Lincoln, he spoke of the need to be people-centered in the political process. In particular, Ambassador Qin pointed to joint U.S.-China progress on global poverty alleviation, scientific advancements, and the rapid development of the economic system, healthcare, telecommunications and transportation industries.

Ambassador Qin answered questions that cover a wide array of issues, ranging from regional economic integration in Asia to the U.S. submarine deal with Australia, from handling public criticisms to building understanding between the next generation of leaders from both countries. Many speakers have underscored the importance for both the United States and China to deescalate tensions and rebuild trust. And to that, the Ambassador pointed to continued dialogue and U.S.-China multilateral engagement in tackling global issues of common interest.
