Since the spring of 2018, the United States and China have been embroiled in a protracted “trade war” that has damaged both economies and raised serious questions about the future of global trade and the concept of globalization.
Ambassador Carla Hills, former United States Trade Representative under President George H. W. Bush, joins David Firestein to share her perspectives on the current state of and future prospects for U.S.-China trade, the potential outlook for trade relations under the incoming Biden Administration and the reasons why the issue of trade has become so politicized.
As a member of President George H. W. Bush’s Cabinet, Ambassador Hills was the president’s principal advisor on international trade policy and the nation’s chief trade negotiator. Over the course of her career, she also served as the secretary of Housing and Urban Development and as an assistant attorney general. Ambassador Hills is currently chair and CEO of Hills & Company.
